Tuesday, June 13th.
Alexander was scheduled to arrive in Paris and then Madrid on this day. I woke up at 4:30am to check the flight status. Everything looked good and so after my husband left for work (5:30am), I went back to bed and set the alarm to get up about 30 minutes before he was due to land in Madrid. When I awoke again around 7:30am, I checked the flight status and saw that it was behind schedule by about half-an-hour. I figured out how to get the satellite image of his plane and watched it fly from Paris to the Madrid airport. It made me feel much more connected to him. They finally landed in Madrid about 5:25pm. (Spain time)
I was beginning to feel a small semblance of peace in my heart, knowing that he was now safely in Spain. I tried to imagine how things were for him, taking in this new country and new people and new language. I had hoped that I had prepared him well enough. I felt a little lighter this day and knew that I would be getting an email at some point throughout the day to let me know he was safe.
Of course, with the time difference of him being 9 hours ahead of me, I tried to figure out just when that email might come. At 11:53am (CA time) or 8:53pm (Spain time), I got the email! The subject was: I am safe. I literally clapped when I saw it!
Below is his letter.
Hey mom, hey dad. I am here in the MTC in Madrid right now. I am sending you this confirmation email so you know i am okay and well. Its pretty cool here. It´s stinking hot as well. Apparently Barcelona is hotter than Madrid and doesn’t snow. Only on the mountain caps i guess. I love the guys here. There are so many of us! Sisters and elders! They made two zones because we were so big. Some people get an overpowering feeling of being here or they feel so strongly about it. For me its more of a calm and relaxed feeling. I KNOW i am supposed to be here. There is no doubt in my mind about it. I think ill get the language down pretty quick. There are others here who are pretty good at it. One guy was holding conversations with the trainers here! I don´t know what Spainards are supposed to sound like, but from the trainers who are male, its kinda of like a high in the back of the throat kind of voice. I know that if i am diligent in the guidelines set for me and I study the best I can with how I am supposed too, the Lord will take care of the rest.
Our flight from L.A. to Paris got delayed 30 minutes so we were worrying if we were gonna have time to make the flight from Paris to Madrid. We called just to be sure. On the long flight I had pasta to eat with some side stuff. I also got pears and [we got] breakfast too! I had some eggs and sausage with some side stuff. Picked up on a little French as well. We just made our Madrid flight with 10 minutes to spare. It was the last call for passengers though. The socializing is going pretty good. I am trying to do my best in that are and not be shy. I am really excited. These two years are gonna go by fast. Ill email you guys later. Im glad gma is okay. I love you guys a lot. Send my love to the family. Te amo!!!!!

And just 2 hours later, another email. However, this email was actually sent when he was in the airport in LA waiting for his plane to Paris. This sweet and thoughtful young man took a minute to let me know he was safe after his first trip.
This message simply said:
Me and Jesse are in L.A as of 5:17 but flight is delayed 30 minutes cause plane just got here. Love ya lots
Aww, it does a mother’s (and father’s) heart good to know their child is safe all the way across the Atlantic ocean.
Day two was a success!
